Using European Flax® provides us with transparency into the raw material, which is crucial as we work towards full supply chain visibility. It ensures that we can trust the origin of the flax and confirms that environmental standards are met.
Linen is often grown with minimal use of pesticides and fertilizers since the flax plant naturally requires less input than other crops. However, to ensure traceability, we have chosen to source European Flax® Linen.
Certified as the highest quality linen, European Flax® owes its exceptional strength and durability to the unique growing conditions and climate in which it thrives—conditions that can only be found in Europe. It originates from the coastal regions of Western Europe, spanning from the south of Normandy in Northern France through Belgium and the Netherlands.
The European Flax® certification guarantees that the flax is grown without fertilizers or pesticides, relying solely on rainwater and requiring no additional irrigation. These sustainable practices contribute to soil regeneration, preserving fertility while capturing and storing CO2 from the atmosphere. Additionally, the scutching process, which involves fiber extraction, is entirely mechanical, meaning no chemicals are used.
Similar to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), the European Flax® certification ensures that best practices are followed for all workers involved, from seed to finished product, in line with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) standards that uphold social justice and internationally recognized human and labor rights.
